ATM Confidential Reporting System Databases [up]

UK - CHIRP: Confidential Human Factors Reporting Programme

The aim of the UK Confidential Human Factors Incident Reporting Programme, known by the acronym CHIRP, is to contribute to the enhancement of flight safety in the UK commercial and general aviation industries, by providing a totally independent confidential (not anonymous) reporting system for all individuals employed in or associated with these industries.

NASA FAA ASRS: Aviation Safety Reporting System

ASRS's database includes the narratives submitted by reporters (after they have been sanitized for identifying details). These narratives provide an exceptionally rich source of information for policy development, human factors research, education, training, and more. The database also contains coded information by expert analysts from the original report which is used for data retrieval and analyses.

Australia - REPCON: Confidential Reporting Scheme

REPCON is a voluntary confidential reporting scheme for aviation. REPCON allows any person who has an aviation safety concern to report it to the ATSB confidentially. Protection of the reporter’s identity is a primary element of the scheme.

> ICAO - Extensive listing of international sites >> click >>

This directory aims to provide a wide range of links to sites of interest to the civil aviation community. Inclusion in the list does not mean that ICAO endorses either the sources or the information therein. All entries are subject to change or removal without prior notice.

ATM Statistics [up]

USA - Bureau of Transportation Statistics

TranStats is a new website for transportation researchers and analysts, aimed at providing “one stop shopping” for transportation data.  The premise is fairly simple:  By reducing the time needed for data gathering, more time is available for analysis.  And by providing easy linkages across many data sets, we can help achieve new insights.  Ultimately, this should result in more timely and more informed decisions, and a better transportation system.

Cognitive Research Labs [up]

david woods weblog main

As researchers and designers, we identify patterns and leverage new technologies to support dynamic decision making in the face of anomalies, uncertainty, stress, and sometimes intentional deception by adversaries. Cognitive Engineering provides the integrative perspective linking technology and cognitive science with people embedded in fields of practice.  We take a highly interdisciplinary approach integrating computer graphics, multimedia, artificial intelligence, and other technology provides the power for new systems.

Publications MPIK Tuebingen

The institute works in the elucidation of cognitive processes. The departments, "Cognitive Human Psychophysics" (formed in 1993) and "Physiology of Cognitive Processes" (founded in 1997) employ complementary methodological approaches to the systems analysis of complex processes in the brains of primates.

MITRE - Our Work - Technical Papers

MITRE works in the broad domains of aviation, defense and intelligence, and enterprise modernization. Our core areas of expertise, listed below, underlie all these domains.

NASA ICNS Conference 2005: Agenda

The Integrated Communications Navigation and Surveillance (ICNS) Conference, jointly sponsored by government and industry, addresses research and development of integrated CNS technologies for advanced aeronautical digital information systems and applications supporting the future national and global air transportation systems.

The Conference is focused on understanding CNS programs, plans, research and technology, and other relevant issues for both near/mid-term (by 2015) and far-term (beyond 2015) time frames.

Weather in ATM [up]

ATCSCC Advisory

Welcome to the Air Traffic Control System Command Center's text only real-time airport status page.  This page lists all major U.S. airports that are either experiencing delays or are affected by a traffic management initiative.  Select an airport from the drop-down list to obtain more detailed delay information.

METAR decoding in Europe

The METAR is a report giving the actual weather conditions at an aerodrome at the time of the report. METAR's are issued every 30 minutes during the opening hours of the aerodrome.

Weather for Pilots

To understand the weather we need to know how these meteorological variables are changing and how they relate to one another. To understand these relationships it is best to represent weather variables in a simple graph.

ILS Approaches

But, darn, I found no single site on the web for flight-sim enthusiasts that addresses everything from basic navigation, to low frequency navigation using the NDB (Non Directional Beacon), to VOR navigation, and the full range of instrument approaches. So this is my attempt to fill that void.

ADDS - METARs Java Tool ~ ADDS - METARs Java Tool ~ ADDS - AIRMETs Java Tool

The Aviation Digital Data Service (ADDS) makes available to the aviation community text, digital and graphical forecasts, analyses, and observations of aviation-related weather variables. ADDS is a joint effort of NCAR Research Applications Program (RAP), Global Systems Division (GSD) of NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL), and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Aviation Weather Center (AWC).

Aviation Standards [up]

http://www.intlaviationstandards.org/

The team is charged with developing common taxonomies and definitions for aviation accident and incident reporting systems. Common taxonomies and definitions establish a standard industry language thereby improving the quality of information and communication. With this common language the aviation community's capacity to focus on common safety issues is greatly enhanced.

Catalogue of ICAO Airfields

The following pages provide a full listing of worldwide ICAO airfield codes. It is not a catalogue of all ICAO codes as I have stripped out all those assigned for other aviation units (Met, Admin, Military HQ, Aviation Authorities etc).

Vision and Neuroscience [up]

The Secret Life of the Brain : Episode 1

The history of our quest to understand the brain is certainly as long as human history itself. Use this extensive timeline to meander through some of the high-lights (and low-lights) of this great journey of understanding.

Grand Illusions - Optical Illusions - Section 2

the site for the enquiring mind. There are new and amazing toys in the Toy Collection, all with video clips to show them in action, and a unique collection of toys you can buy in the Toy Shop.

Systems Thinking

Systems thinking offers you a powerful new perspective, a specialized language, and a set of tools that you can use to address the most stubborn problems in your everyday life and work. Systems thinking is a way of understanding reality that emphasizes the relationships among a system's parts, rather than the parts themselves. Based on a field of study known as system dynamics, systems thinking has a practical value that rests on a solid theoretical foundation.

Vision Lecture

CUErgo presents information from research studies and class work by students and faculty in  the Cornell Human Factors and Ergonomics Research Group (CHFERG), directed by Professor Alan Hedge,  in the Department of Design and Environmental Analysis at Cornell University.  CHFERG focuses on ways to enhance usability by improving the ergonomic design of hardware, software, and workplaces, to enhance people's comfort, performance and health in an approach we call  Ergotecture.

The FOVEOLA, FOVEA AND RETINA of human vision

The retinas of the eyes are very complex structures, both across their surface and in depth. Man-made microcircuits are only approaching this level of complexity at the current time. However, they still lack some of the features of the retina , particularly with regard to the fovea, or central region of the retina. The detailed discussion of the features of the retina will be found in Chapters 3 and 4 of PPOCESSES IN BIOLOGICAL VISION. This webpage will address the following topics:

X Junction Transparency Demo Applet

Psychophysicists have proposed an "atmospheric" model for surface lightness perception. The lightness of a surface patch is interpreted as a combination of the lightness of some underlying surface, and a contribution from an occluding, semitransparent surface.

Luminance Contrast

This page discusses the psychophysical concept of luminance contrast and its use in practical applications.
